16th September – the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is an international event proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly and celebrated every year since 1994 to commemorate the 1987 signing of the Montreal Protocol on ozone-depleting substances, which invited member states to promote activities at national level to counter the natural enemies of ozone (nitrogen, chlorine, &c.)

The Montreal protocol not only pointed the finger at chemicals which thin the ozone layer (the atmospheric layer that protects the earth from harmful solar radiation); it also set deadlines for phasing out their production and use. Since 1987 the preservation of the ozone layer has been an example of a real mission that everyone on earth should share.
